One
of the best bassists in the world of Blues today, and a gifted storyteller. Lane's
song 'Bass of the Hills' is one of the most beautiful demonstrations
of solo Bass I've ever heard. A real talent. ...strong
original songs steeped in the Texas tradition. Soulful vocals and virtuoso
musicianship. Lane
is a treat to play with...a great musician with a great heart. We're
fortunate to have a musician of Lanes caliber representing DC
worldwide. Lanes
the best band I ever had. |
Lane
Baldwin began his musical career at the tender age of 5, taking piano
lessons from the same teacher who prepared his mother for the Julliard
auditions. He took to the instrument quickly, performing music far above
his age level. He began studying Baritone Horn (and later Euhponium)
at the age 11. During his High School years, Lane had the opportunity
to study with legendary Euphonist Brian Bowman.
Although he had brief encounters with guitar and drums, it wasn't until he played a "copy of a rip-off of a remake of a Fender®" that Lane found his calling. At age 13, Lane realized that he was born to play low. Thus began a journey that has lasted more than 35 years. From the very beginning, Lane studied a wide variety of musical styles. A brief stint of lessons with his sister's guitar teacher introduced him to the basics of Rock. At the same time, however, Lane worked with his mother, learning standards and studying ear training. He played in his fair share of garage bands, earning his first paycheck at the age 13. It was all of $10 and dinner, but it was enough to convince him that he wanted to pursue a career as a bassist. Lane continued to play in local Rock and R&B bands, but also ventured into the worlds of Polka, Greek and Turkish music. During an 8-year stint in the Navy, he had opportunities to work with indigneous musicians in Asia and Australia. While in the Philippines, he worked regularly with a variety of Filipino bands as well as bands populated by service-members. Upon his return to the states, Lane had the opportunity to study with the legendary Carol Kaye for several months. The time spent with Carol convinced Lane to return to music as a full-time career. Shortly thereafter, Lane moved back to his home in Northern Virginia to pursue his passion. Since 1982, Lane has worked with numerous band leaders and producers, helping artists achieve their dreams. (See Clients for a partial list.) In 1988, he was awarded status as a Musical Ambassador of Washington, DC. Lane's touring credits cover six continents, including a tour of Italy under the auspices of the DC Commision for Arts and Humanities. Lane is also an accomplished writer, with numerous articles and essays on music published in print and on the web. (Visit the Bass Notes page for links to some of these articles.) In 2004, his essay A Gift of Spirit was included in Chicken Soup to Inspire the Body & Soul®. (More...) In addition to working for other bandleaders and producers, Lane fronts Deeper Blues, a trio performing Lane's catalog of deeper stories. Featuring veteran Blues guitarist Gary Jones and up-and-coming drummer James Jones, the band is quickly gaining recognition internationally due to Lane's songs of pain and redemption, and the band's outstanding musicianship. The band has recently released its first CD, Dig the Hole, and looks forward to many touring opportunities in 2008. Currently located in East-Central Illinois, Lane continues to work freelance onstage and in the studio, and is accepting a limited number of students in his home. He is also preparing for a solo act that will feature drum and looping machines along with bass and his new baritone guitar. Since July 1st, 2007, Lane has co-hosted Bass Talk with Abe & Lane, an Internet radio show focusing on all things low. The show will feature numerous well-known bassists, including Billy Sheehan, Mike Watt, TM Stevens, Mark Egan, T-bone Wolk and many, many more. The show will air Sundays, 6-10 pm Central Time.
