I knew you would do well, and you have. Makes me proud to know you. - Cesar Diaz, The Amp Doctor |
For
those of you who never had the pleasure of meeting Cesar, I just wanted
to take a minute to tell you a little about him. Back in the mid-80's,
when I was first getting into the DC Blues scene, I met Cesar through
Linwood Taylor, with whom I would play for several years. The first
time I attended the Blues Jam at the old Gentry in SE DC, I didn't get
to play. But Linwood, Cesar and I (along with a drummer) ended up at
a practice space L and I were using. The impromptu jam was cut short
by a short in the jack of my bass. Cesar quickly fixed it for me, ribbing
me all the while, a huge smile on his face.
Over the next several years, Cesar continued to show me kindness and friendship, and was an extremely important mentor. He not only helped me learn about the Blues, he helped me learn about myself. Always quick with a word of encouragement, or a lesson in life or music, Cesar showed me what a life in music is really about. Years later, after having moved on to bigger and better things, Cesar saw me at a show L did at the old Club Saba. After our set, Cesar smiled warmly, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "I knew you'd do well, and you have. Makes me proud to know you." I've never forgotten that comment. To this day, it means more to me than I can say. Cesar's tone has always been flat-out amazing, but it was never better than when he began using his prototype amps on-stage. No one, and I mean NO ONE has ever equaled that tone. If you're not using Diaz amps and effects, you don't know how GREAT you can sound. Listen to Billy G., SRV, Clapton, the Stones and others. Every one of them has Cesar to thank for his tone. YOU should be so thankful. Shouldn't you? |
